Maintaining Good Oral health Oral health is important to the overall well being or your pet. When I discuss oral health with my clients many can relate to the pain their pets are feeling with regards to dental disease as many people experience the same discomfort. Unlike people, pets cannot tell us when they are felling this pain. They just muscle through and often do not show their pain. Astute owners will notice subtle signs such as rubbing their face along the carpet or sofa, drooling, nasal discharge - a VERY serious sign, grouchiness when the head is handled and gobbling food and not chewing it (it is a mistake to think that if a pet is eating dry food there is no dental pain - very often they are not chewing, just swallowing because they are hungry).
The most important thing you can do for your pet is:
1. Feed the right diet - ask your veterinarian about this.
2. Brush your pet's teeth daily.
3. Make sure your pet has regular dental cleanings and allow your veterinarian to take radiographs. Without radiographs of the teeth the veterinarian cannot see what is going on below the gumline and inside the bone. "More is missed by not looking than not knowing" - remember this. Do not be an ostrich as what you do not know can and does hurt your pet. They will suffer in silence.
If cost is a concern discuss with your vet the approximate cost of the cleanings and start to save for this cost before your pet needs the service.
